Well. It’s winter, I’m doing a dry(ish) July, and I’ve spent a lot of money on plane tickets recently. This is all a logn way of saying I’ve been watching a whole lot of television. Here’s what I’ve been enjoying on the small screen.
Watching: “Veronica Mars” Stan/Hulu
I re-watch the entire Veronica Mars series at least once a year. Since its debut in 2005, it’s been one of my favourite shows. My excitement at the announcement of fourth season—12 years after the last—was at an all-time high. And then Stan/Hulu announced that the season was being dropped a week early. I lost my shit and was most certainly at my TV when at 6 p.m. when it launched here in Australia.
If you’ve never watched the series before, I highly recommend you do. And if you’re already a Marshmallow, the new season doesn’t disappoint. It’s classic Veronica, except now she’s in her 30s and is realising that maybe sticking around in Neptune wasn’t the best idea for someone who, shall we say, isn’t exactly sweet and cuddly to begin with.
There are new mysteries! Logan is shirtless! Old flames make appearances! Watch!
Watching: “Schitt’s Creek” Netflix
I’m surprised it took me so long to get onto this. It’s a classic fish out of water story: the Rose family suddenly loses all their money and has to move to Schitt’s Creek, which they’d purchased years ago as a joke. Laughs ensue as the family struggles to live amongst “normal” people.
This could be a pretty cheesy show. But the cast and writing really make it. You’ve got Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara starring as the parents. The pair were incredible together in Best in Show, one of the most underrated comedies of the 2000s, and they still work marvellously alongside each other.
Daniel Levy, Eugene’s real-life son, is also a writer, producer, and star of the show, and damn, he is funny. The writing is also sweet, smart, and really damn funny. Plus, each episode is about 20 minutes long, perfect for a quick laugh while you’re making dinner or winding down.
Watching: “The League” Amazon Prime
So I am about a decade late on this one. I have zero interest in the NFL and I have no idea how fantasy football leagues work. And yet, I’m really enjoying this sitcom about four men who’re obsessed with winning their league.
Maybe it’s the banter, the fact that Nick Kroll is in the series, or just that the episodes don’t require much brainpower, but I’m finding this to be a highly entertaining way of wasting time.
Bonus: “Stranger Things” Netflix
This didn’t make it into my formal (ha) list only because I am just now starting season two. (I know, I know.) I’d forgotten how fun this show is. While to be honest I’m still not entirely sure I understand the storyline, I really dig the whole ‘80s vibe.
